Heel Counter

The heel counter is the internal stiffened structure of the quarter that curves around the heel of the foot.  Its main function is to lock and hold the heel in position during exercise, and to retain the shape of the posterior portion of the shoe.

Sometimes a counter will extend medially to support the heel and prevent prolonged pronation.
